Fishing Report for April 4th, 2010

We have been fishing the Fox River in Depere nearly everyday this last month and have been catching a lot of nice fish. Overall the bite has been much slower this spring than it has been in past years. I think the unseasonably warm weather and the lack of rain are the cause of this.

The entire month we have been catching nearly all of our walleye drifting and vertical jigging the main river channel with 1/4 or 1/8 ounce jigs depending on the wind. I have had my best luck tipping the jigs with a minnow. The bulk of our fish have been coming in water from 10-17 feet deep depending on the day. Because of the lack of rain this spring the water has been quite clear and we have failed to find any kind of consistent bite in shallow water.

The walleye run on the Wolf River is also quite unusual. With water temperatures in the 50's and water levels around what you would expect during the summer there's no saying exactly what the fish are doing. I have received reports of both pre and post spawn females being caught. On my few trips out to the Wolf this spring we have had good catches of males in the 16-19 inch range and of coarse an endless supply of 9-12 inchers. Right now there is no saying what the next couple weeks will bring, but I am looking forward to a good bite out on Lake Poygan in a couple weeks.

Picture is of a nice 30.5 inch walleye I pulled out of the Fox the other day.
